Our Work

At Keeling Labs, we develop and apply machine learning to solve the world’s biggest problem—climate change.

Self-Optimizing
Energy Storage

Enabling the grid to run on more clean energy.

We’re creating a model that teaches itself how a battery should optimally charge or discharge in the grid to maximize the usage of clean energy.

Energy Trading
Pilot

Our first step towards optimizing batteries in the grid.

On our path to developing self-optimizing batteries, we’ve deployed a version of our model to do standalone energy trading in California (CAISO).

Why These Problems?

Solving climate change hinges on shifting to a 100% clean electricity grid. Yet, clean sources of energy (like wind and solar) aren’t always on.

For Starters: Energy demand peaks in the morning and evening, but clean energy production peaks in the middle of the day.

So What: This leads to dirtier energy in the morning, evening, and night.

Solving This: Simply adding more wind and solar won’t solve this. We also need energy storage.

The Big Opportunity: Algorithms control how energy storage works in the grid. To store more clean energy with batteries, we need a better, more adaptable approach for these controls.

We’re reinventing these algorithms to unlock
gigawatts of untapped energy storage capacity.

Join Our Team

We’re a group of engineers and researchers driven by solving climate change with technology.

Machine Learning
for the Real World

We deploy our models in the real world to solve real problems. Our work doesn’t end in simulation or in papers.

Pioneering a
New Approach

We create novel models that use reinforcement learning to continuously adapt to changing scenarios.

Directly Reducing
Carbon Emissions

Our work directly controls how clean energy is used to displace carbon emissions in the grid.

Building in
Los Angeles

We’re building an energetic, in-person team in the hard-tech capital of Southern California.

Southern California is an engineering powerhouse for energy, aerospace, and automotive. It also boasts unparalleled access to nature, a thriving city-life, a world-class dining scene, and stellar work-life balance.

Massive Action for a Massive Problem

The scale of the climate problem requires action at an equally massive scale. Learn more about our vision, founding story, and team to tackle this.
